Tactile offers individualized continuing education coaching to help teachers and educators not only increase their personal knowledge of diversity and social justice but also design year-long DEI-focused curriculums tailored to their students’ needs.
As one of the leading educational services in Washington, we will guide clients through creating a curriculum centered around an overarching concept and providing attention to that concept through units of study, providing coherence and continuity for both teachers and students to engage with critical issues around social justice both within and beyond the classroom.
Social justice is the touchstone of Tactile Education curriculum coaching. Teachers will embrace important learning strategies as they grapple with new texts and ideas and learn to promote the integration of viewpoints and experiences that may be unfamiliar to many students but are related through an understanding of our shared human experience.
Below is a brief sketch for a unit on discrimination:
The main text for this curriculum is Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates, which has become a staple in many late middle to early high school classrooms. In addition, we want to include many types of texts, such as songs, poetry, and short stories, that highlight several modes of discrimination, both past and present, and how they intersect in modern societies. We will direct students to engage with our diverse media landscape, as well as online image searches, to explore how media can be used to further discrimination but also how it can be used to combat and disrupt it.
We recognize that any given school might have limitations in terms of what's available to teach, so our choices of materials and content can be revised as needed.
